Architectural Education Certificate Program

Program background and features

UNESCO-UIA Architectural Education Charter
(2005 revised edition, translation in progress)We, the architects, concerned for the future qualitative development of the built environment in a fast changing world, believe that architecture involves everything that influences theway in which the built environment is planned, designed, made, used, furnished, landscaped and maintained. We feel responsiblefor the improvement of the education and training of futurearchitects to enable them to meet the expectations of XXIstCentury societies worldwide for sustainable human settlementsin every cultural heritage.

We are aware of the fact that, in spite of many outstanding andsometimes spectacular contributions of our profession, there isa surprisingly small percentage of the built environment whichis actually conceived and realised by architects and planners. There is still room for the development of new tasks for theprofession when architects become aware of the increasingneeds identified and possibilities offered in Areas which havenot, up to now, been of major concern to the profession. Stillgreater diversity is therefore needed in professional practiceand, as a consequence, in architectural education and training. The basic goal of education is to develop the architect as a «generalist ».

This is particularly true for those who are working in a developingcontext, where the architects could accept the role of an «enabler»,rather than that of a «provider», and where the profession canmeet new challenges. There is no doubt that the architect’scapacity to solve problems, can greatly contribute to tasks suchas community development, self-help programmes, educationalfacilities, etc., and thus make a significant contribution to theimprovement of the quality of life of those who are not acceptedas citizens in their full right and who cannot be counted amongthe architect’s usual clients.

Social change and location characteristics
Gangwon-State has distinct characteristics in terms of its location, divided into the Yeongdong and Yeongseo regions, with the Taebaek Mountain Range as the central axis. These regions are distinguished by their natural environment and living Areas. The Yeongdong region is being developed with infrastructure to fulfill its role and status as the center of the eastern coastal area. It also possesses the qualities of a four-season tourist and recreational city, making use of its abundant natural resources.

In our society, efforts are being made at the national level to establish policies and explore alternatives to transform the issues of aging population and global environmental problems into future growth drivers. Against this backdrop, one of the new types of alternatives is the movement to explore the potential resources of the Yeongdong region and seek a new direction for development as a new engine of growth.

The demands of the local community and the establishment of a regional hub university.
Based on the nation's new growth drivers and social changes, factors such as the hosting of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the designation of Gangneung as a green city, as well as the establishment of its identity as a tourism/recreational/health city utilizing its abundant natural resources, serve as driving forces for the development of the region where our university is located. In other words, it can be seen that a foundation has been laid for small to medium-sized local cities to grow and develop into international cities. Against this backdrop, the Department of Architecture at our university assumes a central role as a regional hub university and also has the inherent mission of nurturing specialized talents capable of various activities based on the region. Conversely, these environments become key issues and educational platforms in the operation of the architecture program as a regional university, confirming the potential in that regard.

Educational Goals of Architecture Program

The educational objectives of the Architecture Program at Catholic Kwandong University are to cultivate architects with integrated knowledge and practical adaptability, who contribute to the development of the local community and architectural culture. The program aims to design and implement a curriculum that is beneficial to students in performing their roles across the entire Seoul metropolitan area, based on the local community. Additionally, it aims to nurture creative architects who are compatible with internationalization and future industrial society, while continuously enhancing their competitiveness in a rapidly changing competitive society, and contributing to the cultural development of the nation and the region.

The aim of the Architecture program

The issues of low birth rate, aging population, changes in the industrial environment, and sustainable environmental problems not only pose challenges of human exclusion in our current society, but also serve as the background for new sources of growth and future tasks such as enhancing quality of life and building a welfare state. In this regard, the driving forces for the development of our region, such as hosting the '2018 Winter Olympics' and designation as a 'green city,' as well as establishing our identity as a 'tourism/recreation/health city' and a 'city of traditional culture and arts,' not only form the foundation of our university's architecture program but also provide a direction for its development. Therefore, we seek to understand the concept of "architecture and city for the construction of a healthy and symbiotic society." As a practical and concrete task, we aim to integrate "sustainable architecture" and "architecture and city for health/recreation/welfare," and reflect them in essential curriculum and design programs (residential spaces and local facilities) to cultivate professionals who can consider the future society that lies ahead.
