The Healthcare Management Major was pioneeringly established in Gangwon-State in 2007, with an initial admission quota of 40. The program is dedicated to nurturing creative and practical healthcare management professionals with global competencies, consistently graduating approximately 40 to 70 students annually. Our state-of-the-art facilities include advanced lecture rooms and a virtual hospital practice room, offering students opportunities to demonstrate their professional skills. We actively conduct field training to prepare students for roles in medical institutions, healthcare industries, public institutions, and research institutes upon graduation.
In 2016, our Major was for the local university specialization project, a government-supported initiative, gaining recognition for its specialized curriculum. In 2022, it achieved certification from the Korean Accreditation Board for Health & Medical Information Management, affirming its excellent educational quality. Through the implementation of a medical information management education program, we are proactively producing highly skilled healthcare information managers, along with administrative and business managers for healthcare institutions, equipped with enhanced core competencies.
The primary educational goal of the healthcare management major is to cultivate innovative and creative talent in healthcare information management. This talent is intended to assume leadership roles in global healthcare services, actively addressing the evolving paradigm of the healthcare service market, and meeting the societal demands for healthcare information managers both domestically and internationally.
To accomplish these educational goals, the detailed objectives include the cultivation of forward-thinking individuals with qualities such as intellectual refinement, interdisciplinary expertise, innovative creativity, and practical professionalism.
In pursuit of these objectives, the major offers a curriculum covering health information management (HIM), health information infrastructure technology (HICT), and health information analysis (HI). These courses are designed based on the strategic core competencies outlined in the international standard curriculum for healthcare information managers. Additionally, the specialized elective curriculum includes subjects from three out of the four Areas defined by KAHIME: Health and Medical Information Management (HM), Health and Medical Informatics and Service Management (HI), and Health and Medical Information Management (HIM). These elective courses are carefully coordinated to complement each other.
Health Information Manager (HIM):
This term refers to individuals whose primary responsibility is to classify, verify, maintain, and manage records and information related to medical care and health guidance.
Hospital Administrator (HA):
In medical institutions, there is a practice of hiring professional managers or individuals with specialized knowledge in various fields, including human resources, accounting, education, and material management such as medical devices and drugs. The hospital administrator qualification assesses the ability to handle tasks such as general affairs, administration, human resources, planning, training, management, accounting, and material management within the segmented and specialized administrative department of a medical institution.
Health Insurance Manager (HINM):
Within medical institutions, this role involves testing skills related to health insurance, automobile insurance, industrial accident insurance, application of medical benefits, preparation of medical billing statements, and maintenance of documents accordingly.
Upon successfully completing the graduation examination and the national licensing examination for health and medical information managers in your fourth year of school, you become eligible for roles in the medical records team and medical information management team at tertiary general hospitals, general hospitals, or nursing hospitals post-graduation. Subsequently, with a hospital administrator and health insurance company license, you can assume responsibilities in administrative tasks, insurance claims, and review work at various medical institutions.
Further academic pursuits, such as enrolling in a public health graduate school, allow you to transition into a healthcare-related researcher and expert. Additionally, by successfully taking the public health civil service exam, graduates can explore opportunities in public institutions related to health and medical care, as well as various roles in general companies and the medical industry.
