Catholic Kwandong University Museum:The Treasure Place of Yeongdong Cultural Heritage
The museum opened its doors in April 1976 under the name of Folk Museum, with more than 100 relics, including ground stone of the Bronze Age were excavated in the Ponam-dong, Gangneungsi on July 1964. It was reopened as an independent 3-storey building in April 2004 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the university.
The museum houses about 8,000 artifacts with a local characteristic called the East Coast of the Korean peninsula. It also has 4 Permanent Exhibition Halls; including the Archeology and Art Exhibition Room · Folklore Exhibition Room · Calligraphy and Painting Room(Special Exhibition Gallery) · University History Room and; It is a Comprehensive Museum.
The museum provides an open cultural space to see the traditional cultural heritage of the Yeongdong region of Gangwon-do.The main feature of this museum is its abundance of signs and traces of the lives of people in the past Lifestyles and archeology materials and ancient documentation materials.
We are making continuous efforts to be reborn as the representative university museum of Korea which performs the functions as the central historical and cultural space, regional cultural research center, and social and cultural education center in Yeongdong region.
