We provide in-depth social welfare education through excellent professors in the social welfare field (child welfare, youth welfare, elderly welfare, welfare for the disabled, mental health social welfare, correctional welfare, etc.).

In particular, the Department of Social Welfare aims to train social welfare experts in various fields through balanced social welfare education encompassing clinical, policy, and administrative fields.

Introduction

Cultivating social worker talent with Heart, Hand, Head, Health, Human Relations. Department of Social Welfare, established in 2007, has been providing courses to train professionals who solve various social problems in society using creative and innovative approaches through research, evaluation, and sharing education.
Our department offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in social welfare and features eight faculty members with global research achievements and expertise in social policy, social services, and social work practice with vulnerable populations.

The mission of the Department of Social Welfare at Catholic Kwandong University is to develop leaders in social work practice and social welfare policy who promote human rights and social justice by addressing complex problems that will appear in future society through the cultivation of globalization, innovation, and social impact.

Educational Objectives

The Major of Social Welfare provides diverse and systematic curriculum and training programs to produce professional researchers and competent social workers./p>

  • Firstly, Social Welfare System and Policy Area : Social insurance Areas such as; national pension, health insurance, unemployment insurance, as well as national basic livelihood security, poverty policy, labor and unemployment policy, welfare state comparative study and welfare model development.
  • Secondly, Social Welfare Service Area : Child abuse prevention service, family in danger of disintegration support service, the disabled welfare, medical social welfare, school violence prevention program, homeless self-support, welfare for the aged and drug addiction treatment.
  • Thirdly, Social Action: International organization, non-profit organization, environmental movement or citizens' campaign.
Targeted Training Personnel
  • Welfare for The Aged
    Organizational activities at the public and private level related to providing the necessary resources and services so that the elderly can maintain a humane life and adapt and integrate into their families and society.Older persons and development(income, social participation, intergenerational solidarity), promotion of health and well-being of the elderly (promotion of welfare throughout life, mental health), creation of a supportive environment for the elderly (housing, care, prevention of abuse, human rights)
  • Community Welfare
    This course aims to provide key principles and knowledge to perform social welfare on a community level. Professional skills, knowledge, leadership, and empowerment are key topics covered in the class.
  • Poverty and Welfare
    This course teaches the definition of poverty, poverty trend, and effects of poverty. In particular, this course addresses the importance of asset poverty in addition to income poverty.
  • Mental Health
    This course is designed to enable students to develop a knowledge base pertaining to the beginning level practice in the field of mental health. Students are introduced to theories of mental health, as well as mental illness, determination of need, service systems, scope and a variety of treatment methods, role of interdisciplinary teams, evaluation and the impact of discrimination.
  • Childhood and Youth Welfare Research
    The presentation, epidemiology, etiology, and social contexts of child neglect, child physical abuse and intimate partner violence. The implications of poverty for children and how these issues impact the children and families within the child welfare system. Interventios for maltreating families and maltreated children and ethical dilemmas inherent in child welfare services. Placement options for children and youth who need to live away from their families of origin, including relative placements, family foster homes and independent living options
  • The Disabled Welfare
    Welfare for the disabled aims to achieve social integration through the full participation of disabled people in society. In order to prevent difficulties in family and social life due to mental and physical defects, the government or private social welfare organizations provide medical, It refers to the organized activities and efforts of institutional and policy services that provide assistance across educational, vocational, psychological, and social issues.
Careers after Graduation

The sphere of activities of the social welfare workers includes various kinds of international organizations, school, civil organizations, welfare related high-ranking public officials, welfare-related research centers (Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHSA); Korea Labor Institute(KLI)), correctional institution and various kinds of regional community welfare halls, social welfare facilities and medical institutions.
