Geography is the key to understanding the world and solving complex problems by revealing how people, environments, and places are organized and connected to each other. Since its establishment in 1975, the Department of Geography Education has focused on cultivating professionally trained geography teachers and competent human resources for various sectors of society for the past half century. Through geography, we strive to build a sustainable world by developing a range of competencies needed for schooling, academic research, employment, and more.
The purpose of the Department of Geography Education is to train secondary school geography teachers, as well as specialists in social, spatial, and environmental fields.
To this end, our students study various disciplines such as physical geography, human geography, GIS (Geography Information System), education, and spatial statistics, and develop practical skills through field surveys, educational activities, and club activities.
Training of Geography Teachers
Students will learn the theory and pedagogy of geography that they should have as a geography teacher, and they will learn about geography in general, such as physical and human environment, spatial distribution and analysis, GIS, remote sensing, cartography, and field surveys. In addition, they develop spatial thinking and comprehensive thinking.
Nurturing Environmental Experts
Geography is critical to maintaining a sustainable society. Physical geography including topography, climatology, soil science, and bio-geography, helps in solving environmental problems. To become an expert in the field of physical and living environments, our students study geographical characteristics and principles, think about climate change, sea level rise, and the balance of land use, and develop an eye for predicting the future.
Nurturing GIS Experts
GIS is a comprehensive system that uses computers to collect, analyze, and process spatial data to create and manage systematic information. Location-based services and geographic information services are often newly incorporated into large and small national projects, and the importance of utilizing geographic information is being emphasized. To become a GIS expert, students learn about the characteristics of spatial information such as the natural environment and human environment and acquire skills to map and manage it.
Graduates will be certified as a Level 2 Secondary Geography Teacher. They become a middle school or high school Geography teacher after passing the secondary school teacher appointment examination, or if they go on to graduate school and continue their studies, then they can become a researcher and expert in the field of Geography and Geography education. In addition, students can enter companies or public institutions that are directly or indirectly related to GIS, environment, and geography education, and they can also enter various fields such as general corporations, education officials, and private educational institutions.
